Cho Sun

Now that we have our ‘go to’ Japanese restaurant figured out, now onto our ‘go to’ Korean restaurant!   I love eating at Cho Sun in Vancouver(just a note, the parking lot and spaces are super tiny!  So I always try to park out on Kingsway instead)

Also another note… they open at 11am for lunch on the weekends, for some reason Marv likes to arrive to restaurants BEFORE they open…*shakes head*

Since we arrived well before opening, we ventured off across the parking lot to a Korean supermarket, and purchased Choco pie!  I always see boxes and boxes and boxes of this in Korean supermarkets, can someone explain why??

Anyways, when we were finally seated at Cho Sun,  a lady walked in to pick up 2 huge bagfuls of food for take-out!   Why didn’t I ever think of doing that?  Hm… maybe next time I’m craving Korean food, I’ll order take out too!  Inside the restaurant, the decor is quite rustic and worn out.  Our booth was also a bit sticky even though we were the first table of the day.

Back to our meal… as per the norm, we received our tea and appetizers first.

Starting from the left, we have the potato.  It was soft but not mushy.  Okay let’s be honest here, I love any dish that has potatoes in it, especially if it’s just potatoes… I still want to go to Mui Garden for their Curry Potato dish!

Next, the seaweed had a gelatin texture, yet it was a bit hard to chew through.

The pickled radish is another one of my favourite appys.  This was not too sour and the radish kept its crunchy texture.  I would order this as a dish if it didn’t come with the meal! 🙂

The kimchi was not too spicy, so for those of you who can’t handle the spiciness, this is good to try.

What I really like about this restaurant is their lunch specials available from 11am-3pm.

Marv ordered lunch special #1:  Lunch beef ribs and spicy cold noodles.

The beef was served on a bed of onions on a hot sizzling plate shaped as a cow.  I thought that was pretty cute! 🙂

It might not look like there’s much…but Marv said this noodle dish was very filling!  The noodles were a bit sweet and not too spicy.  Make sure you use the scissors provided to cut the noodles first!  Marv had a bit of a  hard time slurping up this dish with a fork as his chopsticks hand is all wrapped up for now.

I decided to go with my usual lunch special #3:  Braised beef ribs and Cabbage soup.

I’ll just start off with saying….I LOVE BOTH OF THESE DISHES! lol, as I’m writing this post, I’m craving the beef sauce right now!  If only the restaurant was closer to my workplace.. sigh.

The beef was so soft and tender, it comes with a chunk of radish and 1 rice cake and a small piece of egg.  What really makes this dish so fantastic and keeps me coming back is the sauce that they lather the meat in.  It’s deep brown in colour and sweet to the taste.   I especially enjoy coating the bowl of rice with this sauce.  It’s delicious!   Actually, I could probably just eat rice with sauce without the meat! lol

The cabbage soup was served piping hot!  Just the way I like it 🙂  It was filled with cabbage, mushrooms, onions and bean sprout.  This was especially good since it was a bit chilly outside and inside the restaurant.  Another drawback about going to a restaurant when they first open…(it’s super cold!..and then you get the option of sitting right in front of the heater where it’s blowing in your face…thanks Marv)

Overall, portion sizes are generous, we were pretty satisfied after eating our lunch specials.  Food was freshly made and served hot.   The 1 thing I’d complain about is their lack of service.  It’s quite difficult to flag a server down and even more difficult to get refills on tea.

“[T]he parking lot and spaces are super tiny” – Is that why I’ve almost never seen cars there? At first I thought the place was no longer open!
    Maybe I’ll try it sometime!
And: Do tell how the Choco pie is!
