Corner 23

What else is open on Christmas day besides Chinese restaurants??  Well, we didn’t know, so we ended up at Corner 23 for dinner!  (btw, there is a parking lot behind the restaurant, but there’s only 8 spots and it’s tight once both sides are filled up)

Corner 23
4008 Cambie St. Vancouver, BC
Tel: (604) 879-8815

As usual, we arrived to dinner early, but we were lucky to get a table since every table around us was already reserved.  We must’ve been there around 5:15pm at the latest!

The place is clean, and the counter is towards the back of the restaurant.  I think if I were to enter from the front of the restaurant, I would feel a bit lost/confused as the waiting area is towards the back of the restaurant.

We decided to try the Strawberry Yogurt Slush to start.

This did not taste like a Strawberry Yogurt Slush that I’ve had at other establishments.  It was extremely sweet and had a strong bubblegum taste to it.  It was icy and not slushy.  I did not enjoy this drink and had wished we had not ordered it in the first place.

As for our meal, it did not get any better….

Marv ordered the Wan Luan Pork Hock Rice Meal with 3 side dishes.

On first glance, the dish looks appetizing with a variety of different food on the plate, however we were mistaken.

The pork had no taste and it was quite hard as if it were cooked several days in advance.  Marv had to use all the sauce in the saucer for the pork, however the sauce was extremely overpowered with a raw garlic flavour.

The 3 included side dishes were peanut&beans, tofu and cabbage.  They were all lacking flavour.  The dish was served cold, not even luke warm.  We decided to just bear through it and not send it back since everything had already been a miss.

Next up, we received the  Five Spice Beef Wrap.

This was also a disappointment.  The wrap was chewy, not flakey and quite oily.  This was not even a fraction close to the beef wrap we thoroughly enjoyed at Dinesty.   Enough said.   Moving on!

My Beef in Spicy Noodle Soup was the last dish to arrive as they had advised us it would be a 10-15 min wait.  With a wait like that, you would expect this dish to be FANTASTIC…. well…was it?!

It was decent. The noodle itself was great!  It did not break apart and was a bit chewy.  The soup was a bit spicy yet also sweet.

We did not enjoy the amount of chewing it took for the beef.  It could not be chewed apart, and instead we resorted to cutting the beef into smaller pieces with our utensils, however we eventually gave up since it also took a lot of effort to cut through it.  The beef was definitely not tender enough to be served.   Overall we both did not enjoy our first dining experience at Corner 23 and will not be back for another visit.

Our experience there was awful too. That was before our blogging days. We had Wan-Luang Zhu Jiao 萬巒豬腳 in Taiwan…though I did not try to “original” in Pingdong, but we did went to one that’s popular amongst locals in Kaoshiong…and it was good and flavorful…without the dips!!! LOL!!!

Phew, was beginning to think we were being discriminated on the bad food/bad service part! lol! Nice! I keep hearing about all the yummy food stalls in Taiwan, makes me want to take a trip there just to eat! hehe 🙂
