Salt & Pepper Cafe – Starlite Casino

January 18, 2011 6:00 am / 11 Comments / 604munchies

What to eat… what to eat?!   That’s the question my coworker Andrea and I always ask each other at work.  There’s actually quite a few places to choose from in the area in which we work.  Today we decided to head over to Starlight Casino for their lunch special.

Salt & Pepper Cafe – Starlight Casino
350 Gifford Street,  New Westminster BC
Tel:  604-777-2946

The only downside to eating here would be always getting stopped and asked for your ID, haha I’d much rather maximize my lunch hour 🙂

We headed straight to the cafeteria area of the casino and waited in line to place our order.

Andrea decided to go with their pasta special.  It should be mentioned that their pasta specials are only available monday to friday.  It’s $5.99 for pasta and a drink.

She decided to get the penne with shrimps, olives, zuchinni and half n half sauce(red and white).  Surprisingly, the pasta is made fresh to order.  They cook the pasta right in front of you while you wait.  Portion wise, they are very generous for the price.  It was very flavourful.

Since I normally don’t get to eat the regular breakfast cuisines, I try to order a breakfast meal every chance that I get!  So, of course, I went with the Gateway Breakfast.

The breakfast comes with hashbrowns, eggs, toast, coffee and your choice of sausage, bacon or ham.  I always go with the sausage lol!   I found the sausage here to be dry and overcooked.  The hashbrowns are my FAVOURITE part of this dish.

The breakfast is also a good deal at $6.99.  They also provide a full tray of jam for your 2 slices of bread.

I find this place to be a popular spot for lunch for people working in the area.  It’s also interesting to see all the early gamblers sitting at the slots/tables.  Andrea got bit by the gambling fever and decided to wager $10 on a slot machine before we left lol!  We should’ve walked away when she was up by $5! haha. 🙂

Oh wow, I just went there today and it was very good (compared to what I bring to lunch, def).
Whereabouts do you work? I work near La Farge, so there aren’t many food options around that area….
What else is good around there? (assuming you are close to where I work as well! :D)

Is La Farge in richmond? Close to westmin/nelson, or something like that?? I’m about a couple mins from Queensborough 🙂 I’ve been just about everywhere to eat around there lol! There’s a restaurant on the other side of annacis island that serves a mean grilled cheese! (but I love grilled cheese haha) The chinese restaurant near price smart is also not too bad(big portions – enough for lunch again the next day!) Other than that…there’s all the places in the outlet mall there 🙂

Oh WHAT I love grilled cheese. I haven’t ventured out onto annacis yet. Yeah, I’m at Nelson Road.

Okay, that will definitely be my destination! Is it this: http://dinehere.ca/new-westminster/theas-taverna I can’t seem to find much googling “annacis island grilled cheese” haha!

Is that La Farge, the one in Westminster Highway between No 8 and No 9 Road? If that’s the case, on No 6 Road there is Buns Master, (formerly?) Bread Garden and a Quizno’s. Else, you could drive all the way down to No 6 and Steveston Highway… But, unless you have unlimited time for lunch!

Thanks for letting me know about Quiznos — I didn’t know there was one that close. Bun Masters… I pass it everyday thinking that they are some wholesale bread shop. I’ll have to take a look. And Bread Garden, I think they’re all closed!

Unfortunately I don’t get paid for lunch and I work on hourly wage. I try to work a bit more everyday so I can have a longer lunch on one day somewhere in Richmond, but it kinda sucks since it takes at least 75 minutes to drive, eat and get back 🙁

Not sure if the Quizno’s is still there. It has been some time since I have passed through the area. If you are coming from Westminster Highway, go north on No 6 Road. Once you pass the East-West Connector, you should see a driving range on the right side. Quizno’s should be on your left (west side of the street).

Buns Master offers some cooked food and, well, baked goods. If you are not a heavy eater, that could fit the bill quite well.

Overall, it is possible things have changed in the area. Again, I used to work there until ~3 years ago and you have no idea how desperate we were to go out of there for lunch on Friday’s! However, at the same time, if you cook at home (as I did while working there), you don’t have to worry too much about it. Also, it saves some moola, hahaha!

Yep, I saw the Quiznos on Google Maps, but not Bread Garden?

I end up following my coworker sometimes when I don’t want to bring lunch, since he goes out everyday. But I think I’ve definitely saved a lot of money, considering what I was spending at school! Working in the middle of nowhere def saves the lunch money! hahaha 🙂
