Colleen ‘n I met up with my parents for dinner at Penang Delight. The restaurant is packed as usual, good thing I called earlier to reserve a table for 730. Unfortunately my parents were stuck in traffic coming in from Richmond, so I went in and moved our reservation back by 30mins. Not a problem and the owner was very glad that I did. lol My parents arrive just about 750 and it was perfect timing, however by 830pm our table was still not ready. So again, no biggie, but the owner kept insisting that he will give us drinks on the house once our table was ready. After a back and forth contest of ‘no its ok’ we gave up and said thanks, we’ll take it.

Well, I already had in mind to order a Teh-tarik for my dad so I did ……… however he ordered himself a honey lime tea. lol
The honey lime was rather sour-ish, felt like the plum drink you get at hotpot…still good. The teh was just alright. Needs to be served hotter.
Colleen grabbed a Penang ice coffee, it was strong and flavourful. As fr my mom, she went with a tropical pineapple smoothie (I don’t know why) but it arrived at our table last and it was rather pulpy and it wasn’t that good.
We were sorta hungry and wanted to try numerous other items but we sorta stuck with the basics again. lol
Colleen’s favorite Roti Canai, it came out crispy on the outside but rather doughy in the middle. The Penang Chor Kueh Teow was mom’s choice, good but not as fragrant and lacking of ingredients, more shrimp or chinese sausage would have been nice.
My dad got the Curry Laksa, he thought the soup was nice and spicy, but he wanted it to have the pineapples in there.
And I got the Beef Rendang this time around. Ummmmm, I still prefer the one from Kedah house.
Now, a notable mention here about the next dish. This is called Lo Hei and it is not readily available anywhere because it is such a labor intensive dish and its only usually eaten during the Chinese New year holiday season, there is a bunch of different variations but it stays mainly the same.
Lo Hei is mostly served as an appetizer to bring good luck for the new year and is usually eaten on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year. In tradition, families and friends gather around the table and toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks while saying auspicious wishes out loud to mark the start of a prosperous new year. It is believed that the higher you toss, the greater ones fortune will be.
Ingredients typically include: thinly sliced fresh raw salmon, shredded white radish, shredded carrots, red pepper (capsicum), ginger, lime tree leaves, Chinese parsley, ground peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, Chinese shrimp crackers and five-spices powder. The dressing is made primarily from plum sauce.
To be honest, its a lot of work for the chef and really not that much to eat after, unless you make a gigantic portion. You certainly won’t be seeing me cutting up ingredients for this dish anytime, forever soon. lol
TOSS! TOSS! TOSS!
After having the entire restaurant looking over at our table as the hostess was so graciously yelling out lyrics for prosperity and such, we had everyones attention and I was more than happy to snap pictures while tossing!
All in all dinner was good, my parents enjoyed it and I can’t complain about that. =)

Hi 604Munchies: Nice! How much was the Yee Sang/Lo Hei? I thought it was funny that the hostess helped whip up the excitement for you all. So did all of you join in the yelling too? 🙂 When did you have the Lo Hei? Normally this is eaten within the 15 days of Chinese New Year. Ben
Hey Ben!
I believe it was $23 for the dish. Lol, it was quite a sight! Apparently it’s not offered on the menu, but Marvs dad was intrigued by the picture of this dish on the back of the menu(since it was a dish that reminded them of their childhood days) that we had to ask about it, so the waitress said she could ask the chefs to make this for us.
Can’t quite remember when we had this dish… but it was only a few weeks ago.. so it was definitely well past the chinese new year 🙂
