Manila Lechon

May 11, 2011 6:00 am / 7 Comments / 604munchies

The name stands out doesn’t it. Street cred in my opinion. To call your place Manila Lechon is pretty bold and you better deliver the goods. lol I’m a big fan of pork. I think everyone knows that by now. And eating lechon growing up was always a part of it. So, I hold a high standard when it comes to lechon from the Philippines. lol

MANILA LECHON/Joyce BBQ
Tel# 604-437-4508

I honestly prefer lechon kawali…..hahahaa lmao… Anways – my mom picked up an order from here before and I didn’t really get to eat much since I got home late.  So I made a point in going there myself and having some.  So I dragged Colleen along and I ordered 2lbs for myself. =) TO SHARE, I meant to share =p

Notice anything missing from this picture????????? CRISPY SKIN! Where’s my crispy skin!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……I even ordered in TAGALOG. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh! You’d think I’d get at least more skin than nothing from 2lbs of lechon.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s enough reason for me to never come back here again.

But lets be fair, in terms of the texture of the meat, it was nice and soft. Flavourful and slow cooked. However, there was a lot of fat with in the meat itself. Think of an obese pig.

After having a few pieces already I could notice a waxy-nes in my mouth and it felt kinda gross and I just stopped eating.

I wonder if they cooked this in a oven? Cooking this whole pig over a bed of charcoal is best! I’m still bugging my dad about getting a city permit and making my own pitt in the back yard. lol I’m not worried about my neighbors complaining, they’ve been over and eaten at our house numerous times already to justify our cooking methods haahaha Practically every weekend during the summer time if your looking for our house, its the one that stretches the smell of bbq pork for like a few blocks and has a cloud of enormous smoke coming from the backyard lol

I ‘heart’ Mang Tomas, but despite the “all purpose” branding, no it does not go with everything. Jeesh, I’ve tried it believe me. It doesn’t go with Church’s chicken or tosino or langonisa. So there! lol

I use banana ketchup for that. hehe and you know the funny thing about that…its from UFC !(not really that UFC, i know) lol I’ll snap a picture of the bottle next time I get a chance. lol

UfC 131 – goooooooooooooo BROCK!

All in all I felt rather cheated not getting skin and the meat I received was probably yesterdays. Soooooo I don’t want to hold this against them but I’m here writing about it because its the truth.

I didnt really like Manila lechon. I went there once and saw their lechon hanged up and it looked very much like Cantonese roast pork, I passed. We used to get authentic lechon from Angela’s in Richmond many years ago. Sadly, they don’t do it anymore. I’m sure there are Pinoy underground kitchens that do these authentic lechons. We just have to do more research. BTW, if your wish finally come true and you are able to roast lechon in your backyard, give me a call and I’ll be there in a minute. I think we live pretty close to each other near Garden City strip mall. 🙂

Marv: Sure thing Crispy! I’ll have to invite a ton of ppl to help finish off a whole pig lol! Sounds like we do live pretty close to each other! We may have even passed by each other and not even known! If you do find a place that does authentic lechons, please let me know 😀
