I haven’t eaten here in a while and something was off as soon as we stepped in for dinner. Can’t quite make out what it is, but there is something definitely off. Colleen had a massive craving for peking duck. And since we both have had it here before and it was good, why not eat here again? Also regularly for lunch, my dad and I would often drop by to have their many different noodle soups available. With that being said. Something still feels off…………

The place was empty when we arrived but got super busy by the time we were leaving. As always I like getting ahead of the crowd. Simple straight forward setting here, nothing fancy.
This place can hold quite a few people, there are even more tables around the back area. We already knew what we wanted to order so as soon as our waitress came back with the tea we ordered.\
Ahhh, first to arrive was our peking duck.
Doesn’t this look off to you? I swear it looks like chicken skin. After I mentioned that this was one skinny duck our waitress quickly said that there is another course, and well YES , we know that. What kind of a chinese person doesn’t know that? Seriously! So I folded one up for Colleen then myself. Because I was curious to taste it, I didn’t hesitate much… it wasn’t very good. EPIC FAIL! The duck felt old and the skin was overly thinly cut. Not much of a flavor and well let’s face it…the duck felt like its been sitting there for a few days.
The second course was no better. The duck meat was hard and rubbery. And although the picture makes it look like a big portion, it was not. It was lifted by the super soggy fried crunchy noodles. Oh the shame. Again, tasteless and bland. We didn’t even eat most of it. The hoisin sauce was a big help!
Of course Colleen had to get her deep fried bun. It was nice and soft. So very yummy when dipped into the condensed milk they give you.
Another thing that was severely off. 4spiced beef noodle soup. My favorite thing to order here. What happened???? Did they change chefs or something? Where’s the flavor gone? The soup was terribly bland and flavorless. The beef was very hard and it was simply another epic fail in my book. Colleen couldn’t even bite into the beef. I was truly and utterly disappointed.
So the thing that was off…I think its my sixth sense or something. It was telling me not to waste my time eating here. I will never go back or recommend this place like I use to. When people use to ask me where can I get a good beef noodle soup in richmond, this was my first choice. Sorry my friends. I’m sure there are other items that I didn’t get to try that mite not have changed in cooking but seriously, in richmond, finding another shanghainese restaurant is like shooting fish in a barrel. And that was the most politically correct way I can say it lol.

Thats really a sad looking Peking duck. I almost ordered it before there but now Im glad I didnt. I have been there a few times before and the food was alright. Maybe as you said they changed chef or maybe it was just an off day.
Oooh…the duck looked depressing…
Our one and only experience there was pretty horrible so we did not go back…
But they did had yummy Chinese donuts…deep-fried in lard!!! LOL!!!
Hey Crispy ‘n BG!
Yeah, both duck courses were bad, we were pretty disappointed on the skin, and then by the super stale/soggy “crunchy” noodles lol I think the best dish of the night was the deep fried bun!! haha 🙂
