James Street Cafe & Grill

I’ve passed by James Street Cafe & Grill enough times in my lifetime that I was finally curious to come by and give it a try.  After a while of debating with Marv over where to go for breakfast Sunday morning, he had a craving for congee, whereas I really wanted western.  In the end, Marv finally gave in and off to James Street Cafe we went! 🙂

James Street Cafe & Grill
3819 Canada Way, Burnaby BC
Tel#:  (604) 430-2223

We arrived shortly after 10:30 and it was fairly empty so we were able to take some pictures without other customers, however just as we ordered, the place filled up really quickly!  I suppose that was a good sign! 🙂

Inside, the place was a lot different than what we imagined it would look like.  I found the place to be fairly clean and comfortable.  Once you enter the restaurant, you get a whiff of indian spices which made us wonder what we walked into.

There was only 1 waitress during the time we were there, and she was extremely attentive and efficient for such a busy place.  She topped up my coffee before I was done(and I drink it by the litre!!)  I was quite pleased.  After perusing the menu, I decided to go with their English Breakfast.  This had your staple eggs, potatoes, sausage, ham, toast and even beans!  Portions here are quite generous by the the way.  The potatoes were fried with some green peppers and onions which gave off a nice flavour to it.  I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast choice here.;

Marv decided to go with their Weekend Special, which had naan, paratha, masala potatoes, beef curry and a vegetable omelette!  I guess that’s where we smelled the indian spices from, actually the menu has quite a few indian inspired dishes to choose from which we thought was quite interesting.  The beef curry was quite spicy, but extremely flavourful.  I couldn’t stop stealing his naan and dipping it in the curry.  Marv found the omelette to be perfectly cooked and seasoned well.

Overall, we really enjoyed eating here and were pleasantly surprised!  We’ve already made a list of other dishes that we will be back to try…there’s even some daily specials that we’ve been eyeing… There’s also another location on Boundary, and we decided to head there next time to see if it’s the same as this location.  Goodbye IHop…hellooo James Street! 🙂

    Colleen actually the James Street Cafe on Boundary Road is now closed replaced by a Japanese cafe. Here’s their Urbanspoon entry. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/1601105/restaurant/Burnaby-Central/29th-Ave-Cafe-Vancouver The reviews are pretty good and it appears to be a good place to visit. BTW, I dont think the former James Street Cafe was connected to that one in Canada Way.

      Hey Crispy!

      Aww it’s closed?! =( Darn.. our server was telling us about the one on boundary(I guess she also doesn’t know it’s closed hehe), and you’re right, it’s not affiliated to the Canada way location =)

      Thanks for the info! You’re right, the reviews of 29th ave cafe looks like i’tll be a good place to check out…I’ll add it to the list! 😀
