Romer’s Burger Bar

Romer’s Burger Bar…. my friend Bao was telling me about his Romer’s experience, and insisted that I give it a try!  So off we went to West 4th to try out this burger bar!  I was expecting the place to be packed, but when we arrived we were seated right away.

Romer’s Burger Bar
1873 W 4th Ave, Vancouver BC
Tel#:  (604) 732-9545

It’s quite dim in the restaurant and was already pretty packed by the time we arrived. There’s a small pay parking lot beside the restaurant if you’re unable to find street parking.  My advice is to just park in the parking lot as it’s cheaper than feeding the meters!

Bao decided to get the(top left), Righteous Rib Burger. It had thick-sliced applewood bacon, braised short ribs, sweet onions, Gorgonzola garlic sauce, fresh thyme leaves.

I went with the Man’s Man Burger(top right).  I think what attracted me to this particular burger was the onion straws in the description.  The burger itself was a bit dry and had it not been for the onion straws, I don’t think it would have been filling enough.

Above right is the Truffle Fries. I had high expectations for this dish as my previous experiences with truffle fries has been nothing less than great!  Having said that, I was fairly disappointed with this basket.  There was a small amount of shaved truffles mixed with cheese to give off the illusion that there’s more.  Other than that, the fries just tasted like regular fries.

Since Marv had heard about my visit to Romer’s and had also been wanting to try this place out, I decided to take him there the same week.  Our first shared post, here’s his take on it below:

So I ordered myself a rodeo star burger, which consisted of ancho starbuck spice(non existent), thin/tiny-sliced applewood bacon, red onions, vine-ripened tomatoes(where?), horseradish jack, smokey bbq sauce and a tiny hit of cilantro.  I copied/pasted this description of it from their website and edited it to actual fact.  This burger was disappointing.  It took forever from the kitchen and it is tiny!  An $11 burger really?  I find this place to be too hyped up.

Colleen ordered up the Americano burger. Also took forever to arrive and once again, copy/paste……… iceberg lettuce, fried cheddar planks, red onion, vine-ripened tomatoes, yellow mustard and bacon mayo.  Just look at the image and it speaks for itself.  Such a small burger.  Even a whopper junior holds a fuller stomach after.

Don’t even get me started with this poutine topped with some kind of pork.  Guess how much this tiny little order was?? Twelve, thats right, $12!!  I was shocked once it arrived on our table like 3o mins from when we ordered, oh, did I forget to mention that this place takes a really long time to serve you the food when the restaurant is not even 1/4 full?  They do know its metered parking outside right?

Here we have some garlic fries.  Don’t let this picture fool you.  As it did me, I thought it was a decent portion, but of course not.  I think if you actually pick this up by grabbing it from the top, it would barely be a hand full. I’m not goin to say anything anymore.   Writing this post is aggravating me.

Yes! on the side you are looking at donuts.  Tiny little donuts.  Colleen loves these and well, I don’t have an affliction towards sweet things as much.  I am indifferent about it.  I mean at $5…….I’d rather make a drive to krispy kreme or have some good old timbits.

Overall our meal experience here left me hungry and unsatisfied.

I love it… I loved reading your experiences. The main reason both BG and I have been avoiding this place is due to the price and portion. We told ourselves that the only reason we’d go try it (and we do want to try it) is if neither of us are really hungry and want a snack. It’s something that we figure would only try once.

Marv: haha I’d rather challenge you to another triple king burger than eat here again…=] Definitely give the place a try, I’d love to hear your take on this place. Colleen said to check out the River District location as she had a better experience there than this one.

I went there earlier this year and I guess things haven’t really changed. OK, some things did seem to have changed. In my case, the truffle fries didn’t have any truffles per se. Portion size, though, was good for a single person (but not at that price). As for the burger themselves, I think we pretty much agree > $10 is not worth it for what was given. One thing I noticed you didn’t mention: what do you think of using brioche instead of regular buns? In my case, I didn’t like it because it added sweetness to a savoury dish.

BB, or go to FatBurger again? 🙂

Marv: Definitely agree with you on your points there, quality did not live up to its prices. The brioche bun might as well have been a dinner roll as it was about the same size anyways.. lol I did not care for it either =]

Great post! I’ve always wanted to go to Romer’s Burger Bar (even thought about going here this week for my birthday) but after reading your post, I may have to look for someplace else. I definitely agree with you in that $12 for medicore fries and >$10 for a small burger will leave me also hungry and unsatisfied.
