After work both Colleen and I just felt like avoiding traffic for a bit and ventured forth to a different type of traffic area. Seriously though, I didn’t think it would have been that busy going into New West….but it was a nice change of scenery.
620 Sixth Street, New Westminster BC
Tel#: (778) 397-1003
Upon entering the place you can really tell you’re in New West by the clientele. We were greeted and seated very promptly, the place wasn’t busy at all and the staff are all quite friendly. It had a nice homey feel to the place. Very welcoming.
So, I couldn’t really decide what to order but Colleen already had already been to their other location once and decided to get the same thing. I on the other hand wanted to give a few things a try and go from there. So Colleen ordered a bento box set combo B.
Her combo came with a chawanmushi and some edamame. Naturally I tried out the chawanmushi and thought it was light and had a good texture to it. To the right is an order of the English bay roll. It has imitation crab, bbq salmon, cream cheese and prawn tempura in it. I thought this was so-so, nothing spectacular and I always think cream cheese to be a bit wrong in a sushi, however that’s just my opinion.
On the left is my order of a Stanley park roll. The sushi rice here is a hint of purple which makes it unique, there is really no taste to it, just color. I found this roll to also be so-so, its got some deep fried snapper in there and the usual crab meat, I really liked its filling and there was a lot of this roll on the plate.
And on the right is an order of spicy agadashi tofu. I love agadashi tofu and this was well spiced and spicy. I ate it all up since Colleen can’t handle spicy food.
This is Colleen’s massive combo box. It comes with teriyaki chicken, some tempura, chicken yakitori, a roll of prawn tempura. I thought this was bang on in terms of value and portion. A really good deal, and this was all very tasty and well prepared. I was kinda jealous that I didn’t get to order this. Booo!
And what else? Dessert!! A tempura banana!(or deep fried ice cream was the other choice) I know, this was rather interesting and not at all mushy as one would think.
Overall we really enjoyed our dinner here and both the staff and the restaurant is worth the revisit anytime. I would definitely be back and try out some other unique rolls and yes, a combo box of my own.
