Sushimoto

Here we are trying something different.  Well, not different, just a bit out of place.  It’s next to Revs bowling alley but not really cause its next to the skytrain on the other side and there’s no free parking but very limited street parking and yeah, the restaurant was empty.  Go figure.

As we were eating we noticed a lot of take out orders from people who seem to be regulars as they are familiar to the staff.  I guess it’s from the people who live in the apartments above…

Upon entering I was immediately distracted by the display case underneath the bar.  I didn’t even look at the menu or anything I went directly to the counter and took some pix.  LOL

Most of the figures are from the manga CROWS X WORST and maybe some of you are probably more familiar with the movie CROWS ZERO………off topic, YES.  But yeah, it got my attention.

After pondering the menu for a bit the waitress came over and took our order.  I asked which would be a good fried dish and she recommended the calamari.  This portion was tiny, I could probably pick this up with two fingers tiny and really it wasn’t anything special. I appreciate the delicate texture and light batter but thats about it.

And I ordered a sushi combo, a tiny piece of this, a tiny piece of that, you get the idea.  However on the menu it says that  the portion of rice is relatively small on purpose to let the sashimi on top stand out more.  Fair enough.  It also states that if you prefer a regular portion rice, please say so, and it will be done at no extra cost.

This was simply a test of freshness for me and well, its fresh alright.  But nothing Ive never had before…..it seems  like pretty much all higher end jap restaurants claim to have the freshest and charge an arm and a leg for a piece of sashimi.

Next to it is a bbq style tuna sushi roll.  I did really like this because of its unique style and taste, there’s a nice hint of coal there.  A tad spicy, over powering spice.

Colleen got a couple more dishes to try here and up top is another sushi combo….BC roll, prawn tempura roll and california roll.  The prawn tempura roll was really good.  Nice big chunk of prawn there.  The salmon skin for the BC roll was super crisp.  The california roll was not memorable.

Tuna tataki was a generous portion up top right. We found it to be quite a generous portion.  I didn’t really taste anything wow on the tuna itself but with it at the bottom, the sauce (ponzu perhaps) was good.

Overall our dinner was so-so, I’ve had better jap cuisine and this place was not memorable for me.  Only thing I really liked here was the toys.
