Off to Richmond to pick up an order from Aberdeen! Marv and I scouted out Alexandra Road and found our first 2 choices of restaurants to be closed! 🙁 Boo! That’s the last time I’ll leave work early! :p haha arrived far too early before any of them opened … So we were then stuck in the parking lot debating between Amigo or Claypot. Since I wasn’t really feeling like Hot Pot, we settled on Amigo Restaurant.

Our meal came with drinks, so Marv and I got the Hk Style Coffee.
For my meal, I decided to order the Grilled Cajun Chicken with Rice Spiced Tomato Sauce. What a long name ‘eh? Well, the food came out of the kitchen in record timing. Not even 2 minutes after ordering, down plopped my plate of chicken and rice. I gave Marv the first bite and it seemed fine, however when I cut into the chicken, it was grossly raw and red. The sauce was not even lukewarm. Needless to say, we sent this dish back into the kitchen. Once we received it back, it was fully cooked, however it tasted like it was just heated up by a microwave. We were not impressed.
Marv went with the Beef Stroganoff on Rice. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we were under the impression that this should be darker in colour, rather than a pale yellow which resembled my sauce. This dish also had uncooked vegetables and less than lukewarm sauce.
Overall, we were greatly disappointed with the food at Amigo Restaurant. Everything felt very rushed, even though there was only about 2 other tables occupied in the restaurant. The waitresses were apologetic and replaced all utensils when we returned the chicken dish. Other than that, we had nothing good to say about this place. Would we come back again? Absolutely not, part of me wishes I had chosen Claypot in the same plaza instead lol!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience at Amigo. That chicken dish is actually my favorite dish there. I always order it whenever I dine there and I never had any problem with it. I dont know but maybe it was just a one-off case for you. Going there later at night might have also caused the problem. I’m guessing that maybe their regular cook has already left for the night. I know it’s not really an excuse for a bad dish but i’m just trying to rationalize it.
You know, we went there twice. The first time I was not impressed at all. I wrote about that late night supper and then came a barrage of comments saying that I ordered the wrong thing. Everyone was raving about the African Chicken (which you obviously ordered). So I tried it and love it. That is supposed to be their signature dish of sorts. Sorry to hear that yours came uncooked. Anyway, did you see the piece written by fmed called “Dine Around China in Richmond”? He pointed out Amigo and their Cajun chicken. Check it out: http://chineserestaurantawards.com/index.php?section=Blog&id=354
Anyway, everyone has their own tastes, likes/dislikes.
Actually Ben, fmed blogged about this cajun chicken in his wise monkey blog.

I think lemondrop’s problem with the dish is it was still raw in the middle. Tastewise it might have been ok with her.
I am sorry to hear that your experience wasn’t pleasant with the Cajun Chicken either! It’s also my favourite dish there! Most of the time I go it’s nicely hot and fresh and I always ask for a side of extra sauce. However I do think the service and the quality has been going downhill. For example, it used to give me a full saucer of extra sauce whereas now it’s always only half full…
I didn’t realize this would cause such a stir lol..
Yes, it’s true that the raw chicken made my decision up for this dish. I’m sure had it been cooked thoroughly and served hot, the dish would’ve been amazing as everyone else has already stated. Marvs dish was warm at best and also had uncooked mushrooms. The servers at the time had also rushed us to order several times even though we were there before 5:30. I think everything combined just made our experience there a bad one. Maybe one day we will change our minds and give it another shot. I’m sure all restaurants have a ‘one-off’ moment/day and it just happened to be us this time lol 🙂
Eeek. Take some Pepto Bismol with you if you do decide to come back. That’s just wrong!
La Amigo’s correct phone number is 604-231-6028.
Thanks for the info newby! 🙂 I just did a search and both numbers seem to be showing up….I’ll give the post an update once I give both a call =)
