Golden Oscar Cafe

January 28, 2011 6:00 am / 6 Comments / 604munchies

I decided to go for dinner with my family at Oscars on the first Thursday of the month.    This was actually a bad idea.  Why is it so significant that I mention it was the first Thursday of the month??  Well, Chong Lee Market in the same plaza has a discount of 10% throughout the store every first thursday of the month, thus making parking horrendous!  I managed to snag a spot 1 1/2 blocks away! LOL

Golden Oscar Cafe & Restaurant
3868 Rupert St, Vancouver BC
Tel#:  604-437-8138

The restaurant was only about 1/2 full when I walked in at 5:30pm.  I was promptly seated in a booth, the tea made it to the booth before I did!   That’s efficient!

The set meals here come with the soup of the day and a drink.  (Please note the mini meals don’t come with the soup, only a drink)

Since my brother and dad ordered from their set meals, they both got the soup.

There wasn’t anything in the soup but small pieces of corn.  We tried fishing for anything else in there, but came out with nothing.

Our drinks arrived to the table next.  My brother and I got the Iced Coffee and my dad decided on the Iced Lemon Tea.

I like how they don’t sweeten the drinks for you here.  Instead they give you a small container of syrup and you sweeten it to your liking.

My brother ordered the Chicken Steak and Pork Chop on Rice.

The chicken was very juicy, not dry and same with the pork chop.  The rice and vegetables were bland, but we weren’t expecting much from it.  They also only put a little bit of sauce.  We had to ask for more since we like to coat the rice with it too.  Just makes everything taste better lol!

My dad went for the Sole Filet with Pork Chop on Rice.

This came with 2 big pieces of pork chop and 1 giant sole filet.  The fish was nicely fried on the outside and had a nice flakey texture when biting into the fish.  The pork chop was equally juicy.  The rice and vegetables were again bland, but once the sauce coating was on, it was good enough for us!

I decided to get the Baked Chicken & Ham with Spaghetti(Tomato Sauce).

Usually I order it with cream sauce rather than tomato, but today I was feeling up for a TINY change lol!   As usual, the baked dishes take longer to get to your table.  I don’t mind the wait..unless you’re eating with Marv, then he’s already done eating his meal and then you’re left eating alone.  haha.

I thought this dish to be quite filling even though it was on their ‘mini’ meal.  The sauce was more sweet than sour and there was the right amount of sauce for my liking.  I thoroughly enjoyed this dish!  I even finished it with no help from my family! =D

Overall, this restaurant is what it is.  The food is good, service is prompt and straight to the point.  There’s no stopping and chit chatting about the weather or anything here!   Just place your order, grab the bill and out you go!   But that’s alright with me, I actually enjoy eating here.  🙂

Alright, so I revisited Oscars before I even go the first visit posted up! Lol…so I figured I can just add to it instead of making a new one 🙂

This time my dining companions are my brother and his wife Steph.

My brother decided to order from their set meal again, so he got the cream soup once again.

This time he said there were small pieces of salmon in it.  Guess that’s better than just corn! 🙂

So, I was feeling a bit off today, so I decided I wanted a Red Bean Cooler instead of my usual coffee.  I found my drink to be extra sweet…a bit too sweet for my liking.

The others got the Iced Milk Tea and Iced Coffee.

My brother decided to get the Pan Fried Lai Fun with Chicken, Pork and BBQ Pork. I found this dish to be quite tasty, but a bit too oily.  The first thought out of all of us when we took a bite was that it was in dire need of hot sauce!

Steph went with the Assorted Meats and Seafood with Tofu which included a bowl of steamed rice.. For some reason this dish took a very long time before it came out of the kitchen.  We were pretty much done eating by the time this arrived to the table.

And I went with the Yang Chow Fried Rice. I actually really like eating fried rice!  Normally I have nothing bad to say.. but I did not enjoy this dish at all.  This was not your usual yang chow fried rice at all!  I ended up leaving most of my rice.  It lacked flavour and ummph, you know??
