There was a lot of hype going on when Chef Hung opened up in Aberdeen. There were long lineups just to try out his dishes! I wasn’t interested enough to wait in line, so I never got to try it until now. Now that the lines are gone, the hype is over. The place was fairly empty when Rose and I arrived there for dinner on a Wednesday night.

Upon entering the place, we were greeted and promptly seated. I noticed there was a lot of servers working in a place that was pretty empty. There must’ve been 2 hostesses and another 6 waitresses in a place where there were only 2 tables occupied.
So, I found the place to be fairly clean. The menu looks like it’s written on a takeout menu pamphlet. You are also given a sheet where you ‘check’ off your order. I thought this was a waste of paper, hopefully they recycle/reuse it. I’d understand if it a table of 10 doing an order, but if you’re just 1 or 2 people, I just think that’s a waste.
The first dish to arrive was the Cold Mixed Bean Curd Noodle.
Next up was the Marinated Beef Wrapped in Crispy Pancake. This was extremely dry and flavourless. The wrap was much too doughy. This was a complete miss. We even asked for more sauce, and that didn’t help this dish.
Rose went with the Braised Beef with 5 kinds of vegetables in clear soup(above left).
I went with the Beef Shank with noodle in soup. I did not enjoy the beef, it was tough and too chewy. The soup was flavourful, but was slightly hotter than warm. I did enjoy the handcut noodles. It was not overcooked and still chewy.
Overall, most of the dishes were a miss. I was expecting the beef noodle soup to ‘wow’ me, but it did not. Portion wise, it was also a bit small. This is probably not a place that we would revisit again, there are better beef noodle soup restaurants out there! =)
