After deciding as to whether a Saturday or a Sunday would be best to hit downtown and try out the various food trucks around, Colleen found out that most of the trucks are only open Monday to Friday which was a bummer. So what choice did we have?? Yes, we booked a day off work and headed downtown for our food cart adventure!
Colleen made a list of trucks and we decided to just order 1 item at each truck. Not all the trucks made the cut and realistically I don’t think we can eat that much.
Our first stop was SLINGERS. We ordered their MEATBALL SUB…. according to their website it has 4 homemade meatballs, arugula, sauce. I really liked the bun it came in. Nice and soft, really good. The meatballs were solid, no fillers. Only complaint was that it was a tad cold. But as you can clearly see, there are only 3 meatballs here, not 4. Hmm!
Next stop was easy, we parked at PC and made our way by foot. Upon our exit from Sears, we saw LA BRASSERIE, and we ordered up their signature sandwich which was the BRASS CHICKEN SANDWICH. A few slices chicken in gravy sauce in a bun topped with crispy onions. First impression from it was that it was really dry. And I hate thick buns. Fillers suck in my opinion. So I added a swirl of dijon right in there just to give it a bit more sauce. I would prefer this if they would dunk the whole thing in a thinner version of their gravy and serve it on a plate. Or simply switch to a flatbread instead. Taste wise, I won’t bother ordering this again and our friend BB can do a much better version at his house.
We then made our way to RE-UP, a line was already forming as we approached but with really quick service and an easy choice for ordering, the line moved pretty quickly. We tried their PULLED PORK BUN. Good combination but again, I hated the thick bun. Not enough sauce on the pork, felt dry but I’m starting to think that maybe people around the area are complaining about sauces dripping on their shirts or something.
Onwards we go! On our way to TACO FINO our good friend BB was able to meet up with us for lunch. AWESOME!! And a real good thing too, BB was already at taco fino and got us some fish tacos. Let me tell you, this was really good and really fresh. I liked being able to squeeze fresh lime juice on it for that extra flavor. Look at it, this will be messy but it was absolutely worth it. Cause heck, I don’t care if I get sauce on my shirt.
Now really it was suppose to be one each for me and Colleen but I ate both cause let’s face it, we were already standing in line for the real reason Colleen came down here for which is MOM’S GRILLED CHEESE TRUCK. Somehow even though this was at the top of her list to visit, it ended up being the last place we visited. This line was long, and I mean LONG. I’m surprised the lunch crowd would wait this long for a sandwich. I guess it just means that it’s REALLY REALLY good!
We have here the grilled cheese called the Jackson 3, a triple cheese, triple decker grilled cheese…three pieces of sourdough surrounded by melted Brie, Boursin and Gruyere. Now this is a real grilled cheese sandwich. Even for me, I must admit this was pretty good. I only got one bite. I was only allowed one bite! Even the other half that Colleen couldn’t finish on the spot was saved. Named. And reserved for later. =[
Next to it was my choice to try, a shot of TOMATO SOUP, it’s the mini cup there next to the gigantic portion of CHILI!!! I was shocked to see how much chili they served. When I first saw the empty cup that the lady was about to fill, I thought she would be filling it with a drink or something, but nope, it was for my chili, and what a generous portion. A big thumbs up!! But the taste, another shock! Really meaty, really rich just the way I like it……..me and BB shared this as it was originally intended for him but I couldn’t refuse his offer to share! The shot of tomato is worth it, good flavor and really for only a dollar, who can refuse.
BB surprised us with a couple more treats from the PIG ON THE STREET truck, the one on the left is a bacon wrapped pastry, light texture pretty good….(needs more pork) =]. The one on the right is a brownie, but not just any brownie, this was topped with bacon and a good hit of JD. Bacon brownie. Enough said.
Overall our lunch was pretty solid, nice sunny day a bit of wind and we really ate too much. Good thing there weren’t really any seats to sit on cause I wouldn’t have been able to get back up! Thanks BB for coming out and joining us for lunch and the treats!
