It’s Sharons birthday and to celebrate it she decided to head over to Au Petit Chauvignol to celebrate during brunch. From the outside, I wasn’t sure if we had come to the right place or not, the word ‘cheese’ was dominantly displayed at the storefront.
Au Petit Chauvignol
843 E. Hastings Street, Vancouver BC
Telephone#: (604) 255-4218
As you can see, there are 2 different addresses on the entrance way. To the left is a small store, Les Amis du Fromage, where they sell a specialty of goodies and best of all, cheese! To the right is the actual restaurant. There’s street parking in front and it is fairly easy to snag a spot early in the morning, however I find the street is packed by the time we leave because of a table tennis club nearby.
We made our way inside to find a cozy setting. Unfortunately they didn’t have our reservation so we ended up having to sit across the bar. A month later however, Sharon advised she received a call from the restaurant asking if she was still keeping her reservation.. guess the incorrect date was entered.
Nonetheless, the server gave us each a complimentary mimosa for the mix-up while we were there. On the right is the Americano. It was bold and strong.
On the left is Sharons Latte, it was rather interesting to watch her try to savour the latte art and drink almost 3/4 of it before the leaf disappeared. To the right is the Breakfast Poutine.
It certainly looked jam packed with fries. As I didn’t try this, I can’t comment on it, but it sure looked rich!
Above left is Belindas order, the Corned Beef Hash. She said it was good, pretty tasty and filling. On the right is Meryls order, the Croque Madame. This was a classic ham and cheese sandwich topped with an egg. It’s definitely a sandwich to be eaten with utensils, otherwise it would just be really messy. Meryl? Thoughts on the dish?
Marv decided to order the French Onion Soup on the above left, it was pretty rich and full of..you guessed it, onions! To the right is the Tomato soup that caught my eye. Even though it’s a simple soup, it was the tastiest tomato soup I’ve had. The rosemary cracker on the side was a nice match. I enjoyed it so much that we trotted over next door after our meal and bought a package!
And I ordered the Burger & Fries, you do get to choose what goes onto the burger, as certain toppings are at an additional cost. The fries were crisp and evenly salted. I was more addicted to eating the fries rather than the burger.
Of course Belinda couldn’t go without dessert. She ordered the Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich. There was a generous amount of peanut butter and chocolate on this dessert. It had a nice salty taste to it as well. A nice combination of sweet & salty to finish the meal.
Alright…we didn’t order 2 tomato soups. We actually really enjoyed this place so much that we decided to revisit again the following weekend.
This time Marv and I shared an order of the Tomato soup. Again, the soup was fairly consistent in taste, we still absolutely love this soup. To the right is Marvs order,
And I was originally going to order something different, but at the last minute I spotted the Grilled Cheese on the back of the menu and decided to go for that instead. Again it had the addictive french fries to accompany the grilled cheese. The sandwich had a nice buttery crunch to it with an abundance of melted cheese. It is a pretty rich and filling sandwich. If possible, it would’ve gone even better with a soup rather than fries.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed both visits to this restaurant despite the reservation kerfuffle. The food and service was comfortable and inviting. We felt welcomed from the moment we stepped in the door to when we left. This place is definitely on our list of favourites.

Hmmm, looking back on this…I think I actually prefer the Chorizo Hash from Havana’s, definitely more flavouring from the additional vegetables they have there 🙂
